Black Friday sale

Strong prices so far, with many more deals likely to come

As we predicted, Argos started its Black Friday sale on Friday 30 October, with over 1,800 items included.

How good is the sale? So far, Argos looks competitively priced. It's one of the first major retailers to launch its Black Friday sale though, so the real test will come as more retailers launch their offers.

Some deals we found on Friday 30 October include:

Cheapest at Argos:

Black + Decker corded mouse sander with 10 accessories - £18 (was £28). Next cheapest, £22 at B&Q
Dolce Gusto Mini Me by De'Longhi EDG155.BG pod machine - £35. Next cheapest, £39 at Asda
Shark IY143HUK cordless stick vacuum - £150 (was £229.99). Next cheapest, £229.99 at Shark
Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon Collector Series set 75192 - £575 (was £735). Next cheapest, £719.99 at Smyths

Price-matched elsewhere:

Philips Series 5000 Pro Flex Head electric shaver - £59.99 (was £80). Price-matched at Boots

Cheaper elsewhere:

Energizer Max Alkaline AA batteries, 20-pack - £9.90. Cheaper for £7.49 at Robert Dyas

Will more deals be added? We think so. Last year's sale launched with just over 2,000 discounted products and grew to around 10,000 by 25 November, so we'd expect this year's current 1,800+ selection to grow significantly too.

Argos 'Price Guarantee': If you purchase an item marked with the guarantee, Argos says it will not go lower in price before Friday 25 December. If it does, it'll give you a voucher for the difference. This could take some of the gamble out of buying early, though it only protects you against a later price drop at Argos, not another retailer becoming cheaper.

Important: Don’t allow yourself to be taken in by the hype around Black Friday and be sucked into buying something you don’t need or can’t afford. Always do your own price comparisons to ensure you're getting the best deal – don’t just take a retailer’s word for it.

New and refurbished kitchen appliances, Lego, TVs & more

Argos runs regular promotions on its website, but it also has an eBay outlet where it offers discounts on Lego, hair appliances, robot vacuums, and more. The outlet is a mixture of box-damaged, new, and refurbished items.

When we checked, there were 1,200+ items in its outlet, but not all will be a bargain. We spotted several items that were cheaper elsewhere. For example, Lego Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle and Grounds Big Set (RRP £149.99) was listed at £135 on its eBay outlet, but it was £121.95 at Amazon.

Make sure you always compare prices to ensure you're getting the best deal possible.

Max discount we spotted: 30%
Min discount we spotted: 19%
Typical discount based on 10 items: 22%

Deals on 1,000s of electricals, toys, homeware & more

🗓️ Predicted from Friday 30 October till Tuesday 1 December

Last year, Argos kicked off its Black Friday sale at the end of October, with deals across electricals, toys, homeware, health & beauty and more. The sale got much bigger as Black Friday approached, growing from just over 2,000 items at launch to around 10,000 by 25 November.

Argos also offered a 'Price Guarantee' on selected products last year, promising they wouldn't get cheaper at Argos before Christmas Day, or you'd get a voucher for the difference. If that returns, it could take some of the gamble out of buying early rather than waiting for Black Friday itself.

We spotted some competitive prices last year, though many big-brand products were price-matched or slightly cheaper elsewhere, so it's worth comparing before buying.

Includes Hot Wheels, Lego, Barbie and more

Go to Argos online or in-store (find your nearest) and you can get up to 50% off selected toys until 11.59pm on Tuesday 29 September.

When we checked on Tuesday 15 September, there were over 800 items included in the sale online, with popular brands such as Hot Wheels, Lego, Barbie and more.

As it's a sale, availability of some items is likely to be limited, so go quick if there's something you're after. Here are a few examples we spotted:

Hot Wheels Action Loop Cyclone Challenge Track set – £17.50 (was £35). Next cheapest when we checked, £29.94 at Amazon.
Barbie Chelsea Pop-Up Doll House with doll & accessories – £26.40 (was £40). Next cheapest when we checked, £28.99 at Very.
Lego Disney Stitch & Scrump Figures building toy – £48 (was £60). Same price at Amazon when we checked.

Got a Nectar card linked to your Argos account? Until 11.59pm on Tuesday 15 September, you can get five times more Nectar points when purchasing selected items in this sale (they'll be clearly marked, but don't use this as an excuse to buy things you don't need).

Delivery's from £3.95 for small items, increasing to £6.95 for larger items such as furniture. Click & collect is free.

What does ‘up to 50% off' mean?

We've done some spot checks to try and establish what sort of discount you can really expect:

Minimum discount we spotted: 10%
Maximum discount we spotted: 50%
Typical discount based on 10 random items: 29%

Argos may not always be cheapest, even in a sale, so be sure to check prices at other retailers too.

Free protection for all shopping!

There's a little-known piece of legislation that turns any credit card into a financial self-defence superhero. 'Section 75' of the Consumer Credit Act means your plastic must protect anything you buy for more than £100 for free, so if there's a problem or the company goes bust, you can still get your money back.
And although Section 75 doesn't apply to debit cards, there is something else to fall back on if you've paid using a debit card, or used a credit card for a purchase under £100. Known as Chargeback, this is part of banks' and card companies' internal rules and not a legal requirement. Read full details of Section 75 or Chargeback, plus how to claim, in our guides.
What the * means above
If a link has an * by it, that means it is an affiliated link and therefore it helps MoneySavingExpert stay free to use, as it is tracked to us. If you go through it, it can sometimes result in a payment or benefit to the site. It's worth noting this means the third party used may be named on any credit agreements.
You shouldn’t notice any difference and the link will never negatively impact the product. Plus the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by these links. We aim to look at all available products. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the top deal, it is still included in exactly the same way, just with a non-paying link.
